OUR CLIENT

Adaptive PE class with students in wheelchairs participating in sports

PROJECT MISSION

Our project focuses on supporting students with mental and physical disabilities who face challenges participating in sports that involve striking motions, such as using a racket or paddle. Our client works with low-mobility students in adaptive physical education (APE) who often struggle to simultaneously grasp an object, control its movement, and accurately aim it toward a target. These combined motor demands can create significant barriers to participation and skill development.

The urgency of this issue is amplified by the broader importance of physical education. Regular physical activity is strongly linked to improved physical health, social development, and emotional well-being — benefits that are especially critical for students with disabilities, who are statistically less likely to meet recommended activity levels. When striking-based sports are inaccessible, students lose opportunities to build coordination, cardiovascular endurance, and cooperative skills alongside their general education peers.

To address this need, our design aims to simplify the use of a racket by reducing the physical and cognitive effort required to hold, maneuver, and strike with it. By adapting the racket to better accommodate limited grip strength, restricted range of motion, and coordination difficulties, our solution seeks to maximize accessibility, confidence, and engagement in striking-based sports.

Sarah Brockberg, Adapted Physical Education Teacher

SARAH BROCKBERG

Sarah Brockberg is an Adapted Physical Education (APE) teacher with School District D49 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She works primarily with low-mobility students — many of whom use wheelchairs or strollers — across multiple middle and high schools each day. Sarah is passionate about keeping students engaged and active while fostering meaningful collaboration between general and special education students.

Sarah is an active member of both the National and Colorado Society of Health and Physical Educators and was honored as the 2023 Central District Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year. She emphasizes that regular physical activity plays a vital role in students' physical health, emotional well-being, social development, and long-term wellness.

Sarah connected with Team BEARGE in February 2026 and has been an enthusiastic and collaborative partner — offering to bring students to test prototypes, take measurements of wheelchairs, and provide ongoing feedback throughout the design process.

KEY CHALLENGES WE ARE SOLVING

Grasping

Many students lack the grip strength or hand control to hold a racket or paddle securely.

Range of Motion

Limited wrist and arm mobility makes standard implement use difficult or impossible.

Cognitive Load

Coordinating grasp, movement, and aim simultaneously creates compounding barriers.

Equipment Portability

Solutions must be lightweight and portable enough for a teacher traveling between multiple schools daily.
